MENA Newswire News Desk: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), continuing discussions on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The meeting, held on September 23, 2024, marked their third encounter in recent months, following talks at the G7 summit in Italy and Modi’s visit to Ukraine.

During the meeting, Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance on supporting a peaceful resolution to the war. India has maintained its policy of neutrality, advocating for dialogue between the warring sides while continuing to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. Modi emphasized the need for immediate ceasefire and negotiations to restore peace and stability in the region.

This meeting comes as part of Modi’s three-day visit to the United States, which included high-profile engagements with several world leaders. Modi’s participation at the UNGA and his bilateral discussions with Zelensky further cement India’s position as a key player in global diplomacy. The two leaders explored ways to strengthen bilateral ties, with Zelensky expressing gratitude for India’s humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts.

India’s balanced foreign policy on the Russia-Ukraine conflict reflects its broader strategic objectives of maintaining strong relations with both Russia and Ukraine. Modi’s administration has been careful to avoid direct involvement in the conflict, while actively promoting diplomatic solutions. India’s humanitarian assistance has included medical supplies and food aid, which Zelensky acknowledged during the meeting.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi shared a photo with Zelensky, stating: “Met President Zelensky in New York. We are committed to strengthening bilateral relations and working towards peace in Ukraine.” Zelensky praised India’s contributions to global efforts aimed at resolving the conflict, reinforcing India’s role as a mediator in international disputes.

As global concerns about food security and energy supplies grow, the meeting between Modi and Zelensky also underscored the broader geopolitical implications of the war. Modi’s government has been pushing for multilateral dialogue on these pressing issues, with India playing an increasingly influential role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and economic recovery. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as efforts to end the conflict continue, signaling India’s commitment to fostering dialogue and peaceful negotiations in the international arena.
